About the Alcohol and Cancer Awareness Initiative

The Prohibition Party of New York is launching our Alcohol and Cancer Awareness Initiative, to help inform New Yorkers about the link between alcohol use and cancer. Alcohol is known to be a direct cause of several types of cancer. Alcohol has been categorized by the WHO as a group 1 carcinogen since 1988. Research has shown that cancer risks increase based on the amount and frequency of alcohol use, with even light alcohol use increasing cancer risks. Despite this, public awareness of the link between alcohol and cancer remains low, with studies showing that only a fraction of Americans are aware that alcohol use poses a cancer risk. Even fewer may have an understanding of the key elements of the link between alcohol use and cancer and best practices for avoiding this cancer risk.

This initiative will involve working to spread awareness of the link between alcohol use and cancer among individuals and groups involved in prevention and health awareness work and encouraging them to take action to help spread information about the link between alcohol use and cancer. It would also involve doing what we can to help spread awareness among the public and to engage individuals interested in engaging in activism to help address this issue.

Going forward, we will work to reach out to state and local groups involved in prevention efforts for alcohol and other drugs, state and local groups involved in cancer prevention efforts, state agencies, and county health departments, to build connections, help inform them of the role of alcohol as a cause of cancer, and to encourage them to begin or expand efforts to inform the public. We will work to use social media and media outreach to help spread awareness. And we will use other methods, such as online petitioning, to engage New Yorkers in activism and encourage institutions to take action.
